PhD Scholarships for Developing Country Nationals in Public Policy, Innovation and Development

Two PhD scholarships available for developing country nationals

The joint PhD programme of the Maastricht Graduate School of Governance (MGSoG) and UNU Maastricht Economic and Social Research Institute on Innovation and Technology (UNU-MERIT) provides multidisplinary training in the knowledge and skills most relevant to public policy analysis and the economics of technology and innovation. This Maastricht-based programme, taught in English, starts on 1 September each year. The programme offers specializations leading to a PhD (accredited by Maastricht University) in Public Policy and Policy Analysis at MGSoG or in Economics and Policy Studies of Technical Change at UNU-MERIT. In 2012, a new United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Specialization on Structural Change & Industrialization will be offered.

Students from developing countries and countries in economic transition who are willing to conduct PhD research in one of the priority topics indicated below, and undertake a compulsory 3- to 6-month internship at UNIDO in Vienna, will be considered for two joint UNIDO/UNU-MERIT Scholarships. The two scholarship recipients will receive a tuition waiver, coverage for research expenses and healthcare, and a monthly stipend.

The scholarship recipients will be required to submit research proposals and conduct PhD research in areas that reflect contemporary industrial development issues, such as: (i) the impact of industrialization on productivity, employment and equitable inclusive growth; (ii) ongoing industrial process, including the decoupling of industrial value chain tasks; (iii) processes of inter- and intra-sectoral structural change and their determinants; (iv) processes associated with industrial technological change (e.g., innovation, transfer and diffusion); (v) the emergence of new players in industrial production and trade; or (vi) matters related to industrial policy issues, dynamics and determinants of sustainable industrial development in developing countries and countries with economies in transition, including environmental concerns, energy efficiency and green industry-related issues.

The application deadline is 1 April 2012
